HOW TO MOVE THE SURVEYGOLD DATABASE FROM AN OLD COMPUTER TO A NEW COMPUTER
Here is how to move this file to another computer. For the sake of this explanation, your computer that already contains SurveyGold is referred to as your "old" computer. The different computer that you want to move SurveyGold to is referred to as your "new" computer.
STEP 1
Download and install SurveyGold 8 on to your new computer. Do not
attempt to register this newly installed copy of the product.
STEP 2
On your old computer, make sure the SurveyGold program is closed. Then,
using Windows Explorer, navigate to the SurveyGold database folder location
as depicted in the table above.
STEP 3
Locate the survey.db file and move it (do not COPY the file...MOVE the
file) to a place where it can be accessed by your new computer. For example,
you could move the survey.db file a network-accessible folder (if you are in a corporate
setting) or to a USB drive (if you are in a place without a network), or you
could transfer the file via a free file transfer service like www.yousendit.com
if neither of those are an option.
STEP 4
On your new computer, make sure the SurveyGold program is closed. Then,
using Windows Explorer, navigate to the database folder location depicted in
the table above.
STEP 5
Delete the survey.db file from you new computer.
STEP 6
Copy the survey.db from the location you placed it in step 3 to the
folder location as per the table above based on your operating system.
STEP 7
Uninstall SurveyGold from your old computer via the Control Panel by
selecting Add/Remove Programs. You will want to use Windows Explorer to delete
the SurveyGold database folder (as per the table above) from your old computer.
Your survey data and registration data is now successfully installed on your new computer.
Q: How do I make a backup copy of my SurveyGold database file?
All of your SurveyGold data is stored in a single file that resides on your computer. This file is named survey.db and it is located in the same folder where you installed SurveyGold software. SurveyGold prompts you periodically to make a backup copy of this file. SurveyGold software periodically prompts you to make a backup copy of this file as you exit the program. As a general rule, it is a good practice to let SurveyGold make backups when you are offered.
You can also make a backup copy of the SurveyGold database file via Windows Explorer as follows:
STEP 1
Close SurveyGold software if it is running and launch Windows and navigate to the folder where the SurveyGold software is installed. The location of the survey.db varies based on the release date of your SurveyGold software and Windows operating system. Please see the following table for guidance on locating your survey.db file.
Note: To determine the SurveyGold software version number and release date, click the About button in the SurveyGold software main tool bar. To determine your Windows operating system, hold down the Windows key and press the letter E. Then right-click on My Computer and select Properties from the popup menu. Also, wherever you YOUR_LOGIN below, replace that with your Windows login name.

POSSIBLE ROOT CAUSE #1
If you are in a corporate setting where your computer is managed by your company, then check with your network administrator and ask them the following question: "Do we use a proxy server to get to the Internet?" If the answer is yes, then follow-up by asking your network administrator these questions:
- What is the proxy server TCP/IP address? Your administrator may give you a name for the proxy server. This will not do. You need to know the TCP/IP address of the proxy server, a series of numbers separated by three dots.
- What is the proxy server port number?
- What user ID and password (if any) is used to gain access to the proxy server.
Once you have the answer to these questions, complete the following steps.
1) Launch the SurveyGold software.
2) Click on the Help button in the SurveyGold software.
3) Click the Change Your SurveyGold Preferences button. This opens the SurveyGold Preferences window.
4) Click the Proxy Server tab. Ensure that the proxy server settings are correct and click OK.
POSSIBLE ROOT CAUSE #2
If you are still unable to activate the subscription, this means that some other program on your computer is blocking SurveyGold software from talking to the surveygold.com subscription server via the Internet.
The most likely culprit is antivirus software running on your workstation. Some antivirus programs interpret SurveyGold's attempt to access the Internet as suspicious blocking its attempt to connect with the SurveyGold Plus subscription server via the Internet.
To resolve this, access your antivirus software and "whitelist" (mark as "safe") the following programs that reside in the "C:\Program Files\SurveyGold" folder:
surveygold.exe
rteng9.exe
update.exe
If you are unfamiliar with how to do this, refer to your antivirus software's help facility and look in the section pertaining to "Internet worm protection". A "worm" is a virus software program that attempts to connect to the Internet from your computer and contact other computers so that it can distribute itself to other computers.
A: The ability to renew your SurveyGold Plus subscription is enabled any time in the 90 days prior to the subscription expiration date or any time after the subscription expires.
GUIDANCE FOR INDIVIDUAL LICENSE HOLDERS
Purchasing a renewal can be done by clicking the About button in the SurveyGold main tool bar and then clicking on the Renew Your Plus Subscription button. This button is only visible during the aforementioned time period.
GUIDANCE FOR GROUP LICENSE HOLDERS
Purchasing a renewal can only be done by your group license manager. You can notify your institution's designated SurveyGold group license manager via email that you want to purchase a renewal by clicking the About button in the SurveyGold main tool bar and then clicking on the Renew Your Plus Subscription button. This uses your email program to automatically create an email request addressed to your group license manager. This button is only visible during the aforementioned time period.
HOW TO MAKE THE BUTTON APPEAR
If you are certain that you are within the renewal time period for your SurveyGold Plus subscription and yet the Renew Your Plus Subscription button does not appear in the About panel, it is likely that your are using a very old release of SurveyGold 8. Here is how to proceed:
STEP 1
Backup your SurveyGold database file as per the guidance in the second item under the "Installation Questions" FAQ topic on this page. This is a best practice prior to performing any software upgrade.
STEP 2
Uninstall SurveyGold 8 via Windows Control Panel --> Add/Remove Programs. This does not delete your data.
STEP 3
Download and install SurveyGold 8 directly from the software download page on this web site making sure to install it in the same folder where SurveyGold was previously installed (this is normally "C:\Program Files\SurveyGold").
You should now be able to launch your SurveyGold 8 software and proceed with performing the subscription renewal.
Q: How do I acquire SurveyGold software updates?
A: The ability to acquire SurveyGold software updates is provided as long as your SurveyGold Plus subscription is activated. When your SurveyGold Plus expires, you can no longer acquire software updates.
You acquire the most up-to-date SurveyGold software when your computer is connected to Internet by clicking the About button in the SurveyGold main tool bar and then clicking on the Check for Software Updates button. A software update dialog appears and the process begins by downloading the software directly from the SurveyGold software update server. After the software update files are downloaded to your computer, the process automatically installs the software updates. Normally, this entire process only takes a moment. Your data is not affected in any way as a result of software updates.
Golden Hills Software is producing software updates constantly. So, you should check for SurveyGold software updates often so that you have the latest features and enhancements. SurveyGold software will occasionally ask you if you would like to check for updates as you launch the program.
WHAT TO DO IF THE SOFTWARE UPDATE PROCESS FAILS
The software update is downloaded as a set of files. All of the files in a software update set must be downloaded for the update to install correctly. On occasion, one or more of the files fails to download successfully. You will know this when the software update dialog informs you that the update was not successful.
To resolve this, simply click the Check for Software Updates button in the About panel again. The software update process will download any remaining files and then complete the installation of the new software.
Q: How do I conduct a survey with SurveyGold?
A: Here is quick summary of how you conduct a survey:
1. Create a set of survey questions.
2. Determine target respondents.
3. Administer survey in one of the following ways:
- Print, distribute, and collect questionnaire forms
4. Analyze survey results.- Call known respondents on the phone and enter responses into SurveyGold
- Place a web survey form on your web site or our web site and automatically collect responses
For more information, the SurveyGold User Guide addresses the following:
A: The SurveyGold User Guide is available on the surveygold.com web site. It contains detailed explanations of SurveyGold features. It also provides step-by-step instructions on how to complete common tasks.
We chose to keep the user guide on the web site because of the extensive graphics it contains. Had we included the guide in the setup program it would have made it an extraordinarily large file to download.
Q: How do I delete multiple respondents?
A: In the Setup Survey tab, click on the Respondent Master List. Then, from the list on the right, click on the first respondent. Then hold down the SHIFT key and click on an item to select a range of respondents or hold down the CTRL key and click on a respondent item to select individual respondents. Then press the Delete key on your keyboard or right-click on any of the selected respondents and select Delete from the popup menu.
Q: How do I print survey results?
A: You print results from within the VIEW RESULTS feature. When a graph or list is displayed in the viewer, simply right-click anywhere in the window to display a popup menu of options. Select "Print" from the popup menu to print the displayed results.
You may also print more formal reports and analysis graphs from within the ANALYZE RESULTS feature. The most frequently used actions in ANALYZE RESULTS that produce survey results are:
A: Install a free PDF print driver, such as PDFCreator or CutePDF on to your workstation. The PDF print driver's purpose in life is to allow you to create a PDF file from any software application (e.g., SurveyGold) that allows you to print.
If you are interested in pursuing this, here are the steps showing an example of performing the List Results action in the Analyze Results tab and saving it to a PDF file.
STEP 1
Download and install the free PDFCreator PDF print driver or download and install the free CutePDF print driver. This one-time installation process only takes about two minutes to accomplish.
STEP 2
Launch SurveyGold, select the Analyze Results tab, select your survey and perform the List Results action. This produces your report.
STEP 3
Right-click anywhere on the report and select Print Setup from the popup menu.
STEP 4
Select the PDF print driver (PDFCreator or CutePDF) from the list of printers and click OK. This is telling Windows to use the PDF print driver when you want to print from SurveyGold.
STEP 5
Right-click anywhere on the report and select Print from the popup menu. Follow the instructions for naming and saving your PDF file.
Q: How do I clear a survey of responses?
A: The most straightforward way to do this is to remove respondents from the survey. Removing a respondent from a survey deletes any responses provided by that respondent for that survey.
You can remove respondents from a survey from within SETUP SURVEY. Double-click on the survey that you wish to clear of respondents. Click on the RESPONDENTS tab. Select the respondents that you want to remove from the list on the right entitled "Include in the Survey:". Drag the selected respondents to the list on the left entitled "Exclude from the Survey:". Click OK to complete the process and click the Yes button when prompted to delete responses. Your survey is now clear of the selected respondents and their responses as well.
You can also remove respondents from a survey from within CONDUCT SURVEY. Simply select the survey you wish to clear of respondents. Click on the respondent you want to delete. Then click the "Remove Respondent" button.
A: Yes, all references to the SurveyGold product can be eliminated easily so that your entire web survey process look like yours and not ours. Here is how to do this.
The reference to SurveyGold can be easily removed from a web survey form with an HTML editor. Simply open your web survey file in your choice of HTML editors (FrontPage Express, etc.), and remove the link.
Regarding the response page, the "Advanced" button in the "Create Web Survey Form" window allows you to specify the address of custom response page that is presented to the web survey respondent immediately after they click the Submit Your Responses button in the web survey form. You can create this custom "thank you" web page using an HTML editor and copying it on your web site so that it can be accessed.
A: Assuming that A) you are doing a web survey and B) you don't mind losing your existing responses to the survey, all you need to do is delete the old respondents from the survey. You can do this easily from SETUP SURVEY by double-clicking on your survey to open the survey properties sheet. Click on the second tab. Then drag all of the respondents from the rightmost list and drop them on the leftmost list. Then click OK.
Assuming that A) you are doing web survey and B) you do want to retain your existing survey responses, I recommend creating a clone of the first survey. You can do this by creating a new survey in SETUP SURVEY (by clicking the New Survey button). However, don't add any sections to your survey. Then click on your old survey. Then right-click on the sections of the old survey one at a time and selection Copy To Another Survey. Select your new survey and click OK. Repeat this for every section in the survey.
It is important to note that when doing web surveys, it is not necessary to pre-specify the respondents. The respondent data is added to SurveyGold as each set of responses is imported into the product.
A: First, let's talk about the VIEW RESULTS feature. Currently, SurveyGold creates pie charts in the VIEW RESULTS feature when the question has choices. If the question is a fill-in-the-blank (i.e., no choices) type of question, then SurveyGold presents the responses individually. However, it does not summarize. For example, if ten respondents said "I like school." as a response, then "I like school." shows up ten time.
Now, let's talk about the ANALYZE RESULTS feature. There are two actions that you can take here that will likely be of interest to you. The first is the "Create Tabular Listing of Results Showing Response Counts and Percentages" action. This creates a concise summary of the responses provided to each question. You can print this report by right-clicking and selecting the Print item from the popup menu. The second is the "Publish Report of Survey Results Using Microsoft Word" action. In the "Specify your publishing preferences." field, you can select "Tabular listing of results" and word will produce a well-formatted summary of the responses provided to each question.
If any of these options are not satisfactory to you, another option that is available in ANALYZE RESULTS is the "Convert Results to Another Data Format" action. You can easily export all of the responses to Excel format where you can manipulate the results with Excel or another third-party data analysis product. PivotCharts and PivotTables in Excel are highly recommend. They are very easy to create and can provide interesting cross-sections of the data. For more help on those features, see the Excel help documentation.
Q: How long will my web survey responses remain available on the surveygold.com web site?
A: Your web responses are removed from the surveygold.com web site immediately after they are downloaded to your computer when you click the Get Web Responses button in the CONDUCT SURVEY tab of your SurveyGold software. If you neglect to click the Get Web Responses for a long period of time, your web survey responses will be retained on surveygold.com for a period of six months. Any web survey responses dated six months or older are considered abandoned and are subject to removal by the surveygold.com webmaster.
A: There is no need to be concerned about deleting survey responses from the SurveyGold web site for surveys that are no longer required. This is because SurveyGold, even though it may download responses for a survey you have deleted, will not import any responses for a survey that has been deleted.
Q: I've been getting e-mail notifications each time a respondent submits a web survey, but when I go to view the results, the number of respondents and results is the same as before (it doesn't reflect any new submissions). Can you help?
A: Responses show up in the VIEW RESULTS feature once they reside in your SurveyGold database. In the final analysis, they reside in your SurveyGold database because of one of two reasons:
A) You entered responses in via the CONDUCT SURVEY feature, or...
B) The responses were automatically merged into the database via the GET WEB RESPONSES feature.
If you are getting notifications of new responses each time a respondent submits a response, then you have likely created the web survey file (via the Save As Web File menu option in SETUP SURVEY) using the "Email responses immediately to my address" option. Using this option, each respondent's responses are emailed to you and you must do the A step above, enter them in via the CONDUCT SURVEY feature.
If you want to have the results show up automatically in the VIEW RESULTS feature, this requires that you create your web survey file (via the Save As Web File menu option in SETUP SURVEY) using the "Record responses in a web file" option. Using this option, you will be notified when the first respondent submits responses on a particular day. This keeps you from being bombarded with emails. Later, at your leisure, you can go to the CONDUCT SURVEY feature and click on the "Get Web Responses" button. Your web survey responses (which are residing on a web file on the SurveyGold web site) will then be accessed, downloaded and merged in to your SurveyGold database.
Q: How can I keep a respondent from submitting more than one set of responses to a web survey form?
A: SurveyGold provides a feature that prevents a respondent from submitting more than one set of responses to the same survey. This feature is often referred to as a "ballot box stuffing" feature. The feature can be turned on or off via a checkbox within the SETUP SURVEY tab when saving the web survey file.
The feature works via a cookie as opposed to a web address (e.g., TCP/IP address.) Cookies are typically managed on a personal computer's user login ID basis. So, SurveyGold web surveys that employ this feature normally work fine even when multiple computer users share the same computer.
If you are curious as to how the feature works, here is a brief overview:
STEP 1 - READ THE SURVEY ID FROM THE SURVEY FORM BEING SUBMITTED
When a response is submitted to a web survey form (when the respondent clicks the “Submit Your Responses” button), a response processing program that resides on the surveygold.com web site reads the survey ID hidden field in the web survey form.
Note: Each web survey form created by SurveyGold contains a unique survey ID number that is encoded into the web survey form as a hidden field.
STEP 2 - READ THE EXISTING SURVEY IDS FROM THE SURVEYGOLD COOKIE
The response processing program then reads the SurveyGold cookie on that particular computer.
Note: The SurveyGold cookie is a system file that resides on the submitting computer. It contains the survey IDs of all SurveyGold web survey forms that have ever been submitted via the submitting computer by the currently logged in user. STEP 3 - ALLOW/DISALLOW SUBMISSION BASED ON MATCHING SURVEY ID
The response processing program then compares the survey ID of the survey being submitted against all of the survey IDs in the SurveyGold cookie.
If the response processing program does not find a survey ID in the cookie that matches the survey ID of the web survey form, it writes the survey ID of the web survey form to the cookie. This produces an audit trail via the cookie that responses to that survey have been submitted by this user. Then, the web survey responses are processed normally.
If, on the contrary, the response processing program finds a survey ID in the cookie that matches the survey ID of the web survey form being submitted, the web survey responses begin submitted are disallowed. A polite message appears to the respondent indicating that they have already submitted responses to this survey, that they cannot submit subsequent responses, and that their first responses will be used.
The reason that your respondents are experiencing this "you have already answered this survey" type of behavior is because the web survey was created with the following option enabled:
Detect and prohibit multiple submissions by the same respondent
This option is enabled/disabled via a checkbox that appears in the Save Web Survey Form window in the Restrictions tab.
Two ways exist to resolve this behavior. Both ways involve making changes to the web survey form. Regardless of which way you choose, you will probably want to redistribute the web survey form (e.g., place the new web survey form on your web site) after the changes have been made.
EASIEST, NON-TECHNICAL WAY TO RESOLVE THIS BEHAVIOR
The easiest way to turn off the feature is to perform the "Save As Web Form" action again via Setup Survey in your SurveyGold software making sure to uncheck the option entitled "Detect and prohibit multiple submissions from the same respondent".
SLIGHTLY MORE TECHNICAL WAY TO RESOLVE THIS BEHAVIOR
Another way to turn off the feature (if you are comfortable editing an HTML file) is to edit the actual web survey form (using Windows Notepad or another similar text editor).
If your web survey form was created using SurveyGold 7, then change the HTML that looks like this...

BACKGROUND
Effective November 10, 2007, web survey forms created by SurveyGold 7 (or earlier versions) will no longer process web survey responses. Since the release of SurveyGold 8 on November 10, 2006, Golden Hills Software has been proactively communicating with our customer base regarding this impending change in service. These communications have been included in special notification paragraphs contains in the ongoing web survey response notification emails sent to survey authors when respondents submit responses to web survey forms. We regret that this communication did not reach you directly.
HOW TO CONTINUE USING SURVEYGOLD WEB SURVEY FORMS
To continue to use SurveyGold web survey forms you must:
1) Download and install SurveyGold 8 on to the computer that has the registered version of SurveyGold 7 or earlier. See http://www.surveygold.com/upgrade_sg.htm for details.
2) After installing SurveyGold 8, you must launch the software and activate a free 7-day trial SurveyGold Plus subscription. Then proceed into the software, allowing the SurveyGold 8 software to upgrade your existing database file. (Your existing data will be retained in SurveyGold 8.)
3) Click the Purchase button from within the SurveyGold 8 software to purchase an upgrade to SurveyGold 8. The upgrade price includes:
- A perpetual SurveyGold 8 license, you can use the software forever
- A one-year subscription to SurveyGold Plus. See http://www.surveygold.com/plus.htm for details.
4) After purchasing your SurveyGold 8 upgrade, you must re-save this survey as a web survey form again as follows:
- Launch SurveyGold 8 and select the Setup Survey tab.
- Locate your survey and right-click on it.
- Select "Save As Web Form" from the popup menu.
- Complete the process of saving and creating your web survey form.
- Redistribute this newly saved web survey form, replacing your existing web survey form (that was originally created using SurveyGold 7 or earlier).
FREE SURVEYGOLD 8 MIGRATION UTILITY
A free SurveyGold 8 Web Survey Migration Utility is available that provides the ability to migrate existing SurveyGold 7 (and earlier) web survey forms to SurveyGold 8 compatibility without having to re-save each web survey form from within SurveyGold. This is intended for those customers who may have made extensive cosmetic changes to their SurveyGold 7 (or earlier) web survey forms and may find it burdensome to re-save and the reapply those cosmetic changes.
The SurveyGold 8 Web Survey Migration Utility can only be run on a computer that has SurveyGold 8 installed on it. Here is how to acquire it:
1) Download http://www.surveygold.com/ftp/sgwebfix.zip to the folder that has SurveyGold 8 installed on it.
Note: For those institutions that have multiple SurveyGold 8 users, it is important that only the web survey forms created by a particular user be migrated by the Web Survey Migration Utility running on that user's computer. To say it another way, if you are attempting to migrate a web survey form that was not created by your instance of SurveyGold, the migration process will not work reliably. This is because there is data in the SurveyGold user's database that must be encoded into the web survey form during the migration process. If that data is unavailable to the migration utility, then the migrated web survey form will be missing essential data.
2) Unzip the sgwebfix.exe file from the zip file into the folder that has SurveyGold 8 installed on it.
3) Launch the sgwebfix.exe by double-clicking on it.
4) Navigate to the folder that contains your SurveyGold 7 web survey form(s) to be migrated to SurveyGold 8.
5) For each form to be migrated, simply select the form and click the migrate button.
The utility makes a backup copy of the original (the name of the backup file is identical to the original and has a date/time stamp appended to it). It them reconfigures all of the metadata (the hidden form fields) in the selected web survey form to be compatible with SurveyGold 8 and to use the SurveyGold 8 web survey processing components on the surveygold.com web site. Note: The migration process takes only a second and the resulting web survey form can be distributed immediately (although it is recommended that you submit a test response to ensure that it is working properly).
If you purchased SurveyGold 8 before 2008, most likely your SurveyGold software does not include the Templates folder. This folder contains several surveys that serve as templates which you can use to create your own surveys.
These surveys can be imported into your SurveyGold software as follows:
1) Download http://www.surveygold.com/ftp/SurveyTemplates.zip to the folder of your choosing (i.e., Desktop, My Documents).
2) Unzip the SurveyTemplates.zip file to that folder. This will create
several files. Each of these files is a survey definition file that contains
a survey can be imported into your SurveyGold software.
3) Launch SurveyGold and select the Setup Survey tab.
4) From the set of folders in the Setup Survey tab, create a folder called Survey Templates by clicking on the New Folder button.
5) Right-click on the Survey Templates folder and select "Import".
6) When the Import Survey window appears, click the "..." button and navigate to the folder where you unzipped the survey definition files in step 2.
7) Select the first survey definition file that you want to import and click OK. SurveyGold will then import the selected survey definition file into the Survey Templates folder in the Setup Survey tab. (Repeat steps 5-7 for each survey definition file you want to import as a survey template.)
8) When the survey is imported it will be locked. You can unlock the survey by right-clicking on the survey and selecting the Lock menu item from the popup menu. When prompted for the password, enter x and click OK.
